About Narcotic Cell, CID West Bengal

Concerned with the rising crimes of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances for the purposes of abuse and exploitation among the youth and society, a specialized cell to counter human trafficking was set up at Criminal Investigation Department, West Bengal in October, 1993 vide Order No. G.O. No. 3186/PL dated 10/10/1993.

Functions of Narcotic Cell

• Narcotic cell is the Nodal agency of the State of West Bengal correspondences with NCB and other Central agencies and also the Hon’ble High Court, Calcutta.
• Narcotic Cell assumes control of cases of Drug Peddling having inter-state ramifications.
• Narcotic Cell assumes control of cases as notified by superior officers or Hon’ble High Court.
• Narcotic cell engages and contact with good source to collect information of illicit poppy cultivation, cannabis cultivation and illegal transportation, storage and sale of contrabands articles.
• Narcotic cell conducts raid all over West Bengal against clandestine business of illicit narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and after recovery of contraband articles registered cases and took up its investigation.
• Narcotic cell regularly monitors trial of important cases investigated by the unit.
• Narcotic cell organizes training courses to sensitize Police officers on investigation technique & different laws involved.
• Narcotic cell keeps contact with notable authorized NGO and always make them closely involved for awareness campaigning and rehabilitation of addicted person.
• Narcotic cell organizes awareness programme on “SAY NO TO DRUGS” at different schools, colleges, railway stations and bus stand throughout the year.
• This cell observes “26th June” as "International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking" every year in association with different NGO’s and other organization.
• This unit also keeps liaison with NCB Kolkata, Excise department regarding destruction of illegal poppy and ganja cultivation.
• Narcotic Cell maintains database of case, seizure, arrest of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances of State of West Bengal.
